Have you ever begged?
If you see a beggar, do you choose to give or not give?
At a stop signal, in a jeep to downtown Cebu City, a beggar was holding out his hand to us passengers. Michelle, my sister told me to give the vagrant some coins. While reaching for some, I wondered out loud if there was an Anti-Mendicancy ordinance in the city. The other passengers passed me off as normal (even with my talking to myself) and volunteered information that there was.
Had I given him some money, my sister would have spent her morning bailing me out instead of finding a dvd player with built-in songs for karaoke.
At first glance, it is quite baffling to be put behind bars for donating to alms-seekers. The lawmakers may believe it is but for the greater good of everyone.
Mother Theresa’s words however, keep ringing in my ears. She asked how we can teach people to fish when they are not even healthy enough to fish in the first place. That’s why she believed in giving.
In the Philippines where doctors and lawyers are studying to be nurses to work abroad, are we right in not giving?
